The items going down your drains have a big impact on your septic system. Here are some things to avoid pouring down your drains!

• Grease (wipe your pans with paper towel before rinsing)
• Chemicals (harsh cleaning chemicals, excessive bleach, etc.)
• Paint
• Paint Thinner
• Oils (tanning oils, bath oils, bath bombs, etc.)
• Trash (q-tips, paper towels, tissues, candy wrappers, gum wrappers, etc.)
• Wipes (baby wipes, disinfecting wipes, makeup remover wipes, etc. – even if the label says flushable)
• Feminine Products (even if the label says flushable)
• Powder Detergents and Laundry Boosters
• Coffee Grounds, Cat Litter, etc.
• Excessive juices, sodas, etc.
• Tobacco Products (cigarette butts, dip, chew, etc.)

Allowing these items into your septic system may not have an immediate negative effect, but continued use will add strain to the bacteria in the tank, which can have a negative impact on your septic system.

Remember: what goes down the drain doesn’t disappear, it must be treated.
