Does “Flushable” mean “Septic Safe”?

Posted on

Wondering what is safe to flush down the commode when you live on a septic system? Besides your wastewater, here’s the one thing that is safe to flush do your commode:

Toilet paper.

That’s it. Flushable does not equal septic safe. Items flushed do not disappear, they must be treated by your septic system.

When in doubt, dispose of questionable items in the trash can. Not only can this tip save your septic system, it can prevent your plumbing from clogging and backing up.

Here are some examples of what not to flush:

  • Baby Wipes
  • Make Up Remover Wipes
  • Disinfecting Wipes
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Condoms
  • Dental floss
  • Diapers
  • Cigarette Butts
  • Cat Litter
  • Paper Towels
  • Cooking Grease
  • Oils of any kind
  • Chemicals
  • Coffee Grounds
  • Candy Wrappers
  • Tobacco products

If any of these items have been flushed, call us today to get a free phone estimate for cleaning your tank. It’s also a good idea to clean your tank if you recently purchased your home from a previous owner – you never know what may have been flushed before you arrived.
