What’s better? Conventional Septic or Aerobic?

Posted on

A common question: What’s better? A conventional septic system or aerobic system? The answer depends on what aspect you are talking about.

The primary reason for either system is to treat household wastewater. If this is the aspect being discussed, then both accomplish the goal very well.

But that’s usually not what our customers ask us about. They want to know which one costs the least and has the least maintenance, or which one is most environmentally friendly. So, let’s break this down.

Cost
Conventional septic systems are generally less expensive than aerobic systems, though this is not always the case.

Maintenance
Conventional systems involve much less maintenance than aerobic systems.

Environmental Impact
Both conventional septic systems and aerobic systems are environmentally friendly when designed, used, and maintained properly.

Why would one choose aerobic?
So, then why would a homeowner choose an aerobic system over a conventional septic system? One reason is that aerobic systems with spray distribution recycle the water used inside the home and water the yard; this saves on watering costs.

But the fact is most homeowners who utilize aerobic systems may not have had a choice. Most often, aerobic systems are installed when the soil on the property is not suitable for a conventional septic system, or if there is not enough room on the property for a conventional system or if local regulations require it.

We always try to install a conventional septic system when we can. But our installation area (Bexar, Kendall Comal and surrounding counties) tends to be very rocky, which is not suitable for conventional septic systems.

We would be happy to evaluate your property to determine which type of system is most suitable based on all the factors mentioned.
