Recent Rains Causing Septic System Failure

We are thankful for last month’s rain, but it has caused a lot of damage to homes and septic systems. A well-functioning septic system should not be affected by rain. However, many older septic systems don’t function at their highest capacities when the ground is saturated with water. If you find yourself in this situation, here are a few things you can do to limp your system along until the ground dries up. It’s also important to note that not all systems will recover after failure due to rain.

  • Minimize household wastewater usage.
  • Ensure there are no dripping faucets, running toilets or malfunctioning water softeners adding extra water to the system.
  • Pump your tank to prevent household wastewater from entering the drainfield until the tank is filled. This usually takes about 2-7 days, depending on how much water your household uses. Once the tank re-fills, water will begin to flow into the drainfield again. If it rains again or the drainfield is unable to handle the water load, you may experience problems again.

  • Wait and see if the problem persists after the rainy period has passed and the ground is no longer saturated. Even vacant homes have experienced backup in the septic tank due to groundwater infiltration into their system.

While the steps above may help reduce any problems, there is no guarantee. Hopefully your septic system has “weathered the storm.” If you are experiencing problems, we’re happy to help service your system, complete a new system installation, or answer any questions you may have.
