Some counties require a TCEQ Licensed Maintenance Provider to perform service on your aerobic system, some counties allow the homeowner to DIY, and some counties require the DIY homeowners to take a course. Check with your county or local authority to be sure you are following requirements.

It may get you sick. Do you have the necessary vaccinations to protect yourself from waterborne diseases? There’s much more maintenance required than just adding chlorine. Many parts maybe submerged under the wastewater that require being pulled out to be checked/serviced/replaced.

It requires having electrical experience and the proper tools. There are many electrical components to an aerobic system. When your alarm comes on, it could be due to many different things. Will you be able to properly diagnose the electoral components, wiring and control panel? A mistake could cause a short out and end up costing even more money.
You many not find the parts needed. Where there is a will, there is a way, but parts are usually not always readily available at stores. Therefore, purchasing parts will likely be accomplished online. When in a hurry for an essential part to your system, waiting for the item to be shipped may end up costing more in the long run as there may be a domino effect when a part is not replaced immediately. It may also inconvenience your family by having to drastically reduce the amount of water used and possible odor occurrences during the shipping time.
You will have to have the time. In Texas, aerobic systems are required to be serviced at least once every four months. You’ll need to plan some time for service, and also for the emergency situations that always seem to arise at the most inconvenient times.
