Summertime Tips For Aerobic Systems

Posted on

Summertime brings backyard barbecues, kids playing outside and swimming in the pool. Here are some tips to keep your aerobic system working its best and ensure your family’s safety.

  1. Have a professional perform maintenance at least every four months, which is the state requirement for maintenance frequency. This helps ensure the system is operating and treating wastewater properly.
  2. Treat your system with chlorine. Don’t wait for your maintenance provider to add chlorine for you every 4 months. Most households should add chlorine monthly to disinfect wastewater. This is for the safety of your family and your pets that play in the yard.
  3. If you own a swimming pool, ensure your septic spray heads are not projecting treated wastewater closer than 25 feet to your pool. This is the minimum separation distance allowed in Texas.
  4. Consider adding a timer to your system if it currently sprays “on demand” (anytime the pump tank fills). You can set the timer to only allow the pump to turn on in the middle of the night. That way, your kids and guests will not be surprised by sprinklers going off at the most inopportune time.
