Debunking Myths: All New Septic Systems Must Be Aerobic
We’ve heard over and over from homeowners and realtors that all new systems must be aerobic systems. Is this true or false?
This is false! The best new system type depends on the soil at each property. A standard/conventional system CAN still be installed if the property has approximately four feet of suitable soils (ie, no rock). It just so happens that our area of north/northwest San Antonio and Hill Country has a lot of rock, so most new systems happen to be aerobic. However, the south side of San Antonio is comprised of sandy or clay soils where conventional and other system types can be installed.

I have a property in Phelps tx. I was told that it has to be aerobic, but the soil has no rocks, just clay. Can I put in a conventional system instead?
TCEQ regulations do not allow conventional systems when the soil consists of more than 40% clay. You might be able to install a low-pressure dosing (LPD) system if you have clay and meet other criteria. It may be that the person you talked to doesn’t install LPD systems, or your property doesn’t meet the criteria. You might want to get a second opinion by a septic system designer in your area and have soil profile holes taken if LPD system might be possible. If its not, then aerobic would probably be the next best bet in most cases.
