Do You Keep an Eye on Your Septic Tank During Wet Weather?

Posted on

Keep an eye on your septic tank during wet weather

During periods of wet weather, we tend to receive more calls from customers having septic system emergencies due to flooded out septic systems. Since the absorption area has a limited capacity and may accept less water as it gets older, excess water on the ground may cause a system to flood out, leading to an overfull tank or possible backup.

You can’t control the weather, but here are a few things you can do to help avoid a wet-weather emergency.

Five ways to keep your septic system working during wet weather

  1. Don’t use your irrigation system until the ground dries up
  2. Divert rainwater runoff from your property away from the tank and drainfield
  3. When draining your pool, don’t allow the water to discharge over the tank or drainfield
  4. Conserve water usage in the house by avoiding long showers, consecutive laundry loads, etc.
  5. Guard against leaky faucets, running commodes and malfunctioning water softeners

What to do if your septic system floods out

If you experience a backup or flooded septic system when it rains, pumping out your tank may allow a little time for your drainfield to recover.

If your soggy lawn doesn’t dry up along with the rainwater, or if there’s a bad smell in the air, call a professional to make sure the system is functioning properly.

    • Thanks! Although regulations differ from state to state and country to country, this is pretty general information that likely applies to most septic systems.
